Preparing for your first meeting with a lawyer
A first meeting works best when your lawyer can see the whole picture quickly. A little preparation helps.
Write a short timeline
List the key events in date order: what happened, when, and who was involved. One page is enough.
Gather your documents
Bring copies of anything relevant, such as agreements, notices, correspondence, receipts, and any court or government papers. Keep the originals safe.
Note your goals
Think about the outcome you want, and what you would accept instead. This helps your lawyer suggest realistic options.
Questions worth asking
- What are my options, and what are the risks of each?
- How long is this likely to take?
- How will fees be charged?
- How will we stay in touch?
Confidentiality
